Before each semester begins it is imperative that we orient our new students to a life back in main stream, on-campus life. Initially we partnered with Colorado Mountain College for a full tour and explanation of services and facilities available on the campus. To truly make it a “Jaywalker” program, we then head into the wilderness to experience the rejuvenation and educational power of nature. While recreation and fun are key aspects to the process, we also have added a component that makes it educational in the traditional sense as well. Recently the men traveled to southern Utah and spent four days earning a certification in Wilderness First Aid, which makes them even more valuable members of this active recreational community in Carbondale, CO. The sense of pride and accomplishment in this certification goes a long way with a group of men who have waited a long time to feel truly useful again to the community they live in. The bonding that happens within the group is an exceptional launching point to a semester of teamwork we emphasize in our Residential Student Center.
