Prior to joining Jaywalker U in September of 2012, Janet DeMars worked for 19 years in the field of higher education. Janet worked as a director, adjunct professor, and as case manager for high risk drinkers at Gustavus Adolphus College. Janet’s areas of study for her Multidisciplinary Masters of Science program included higher education, health, counseling and student personnel; she chose these areas of study because of her strong interest and belief that drugs and alcohol are ubiquitous in the collegiate environment and the consequences are devastating for many students. After completing her Master’s degree, Janet completed course work as a Certified Health Education Specialist.
Janet enjoys most sports, especially those that give her a thrill such as mountain biking and downhill skiing, and rumor has it that she has also been seen on the golf course. In addition, she loves a good game of tennis or racquetball. Janet is an RYT-200 Yoga instructor and an active participant in the mindfulness-based stress reduction modality. Her greatest joy, in addition to being a recovering alcoholic, is spending time with her two daughters, Kaitlin and Jordin, who, respectively, live in Salt Lake City, UT and West Hartford, CT.
Janet will utilize her experience in higher education to assist and encourage the men of Jaywalker U to find their academic foothold so they can succeed academically as sober collegiate students.
Donnie grew up in Chicago where he developed the love for sports and the outdoors. Through his young adult years he got away from his love for the outdoors and went down the road of drugs and alcohol. Donnie went through Jaywalker Lodge in April 2010. After graduating from the Lodge, Donnie started work as a lead teller at a local bank. Having learned about the value of service work in recovery, Donnie became a regular volunteer for Jaywalker. He sponsored others and helped support the new clients by taking them skiing and mountain biking. What Donnie lost during his addiction he is now regaining by going back to college and pursuing his bachelor’s degree in marketing and business administration.
In December 2012, Donnie was hired as the Jaywalker U Program Coordinator. He now dedicates his life to helping those who are in recovery with the hope that they will, like Donnie, fall back in love with life.
